Documentary Films


Internews is currently working on the production of 10 twenty-minute documentaries which will feature the EU-Georgia partnership. Each film will be devoted to one concrete topic-a project implemented in Georgia by the European Union within the framework of the European Neighborhood Policy.    

Internews recruited a film-director and a group of journalists for the production.

The documentaries will be broadcasted by a national broadcaster Rustavi 2. Both production and broadcast will be carried out in two cycles. The first five films will be aired in January-February 2010, and the other 5 documentaries - May-June 2010.

The films will be translated into Armenian and Azeri languages as well with the purpose of their broadcast in Samtskhe-Javakheti and Kvemo-Kartli regions where the two Georgia’s biggest national minorities reside. The translated films will be aired by two local television stations in Samtskhe-Javakheti (ATV-12 in Akhalkalaki and Paravani in Ninotsminda) and two local broadcasters in Kvemo-Kartli (Channel 12 in Bolnisi and Marneuli TV in Marneuli).

Special trainings are held for village leaders in Ozurgeti and Chokhatauri districts (Guria region in west Georgia). The goal of the project is to support development of local self-government, which implies active involvement of local population in the work of the district’s municipal councils (sakrebulos). The project is implemented by nongovernmental organization Civil Society Institute with the financial assistance from the European Union.

Javakheti - a farthermost region in the south of Georgia; Villages that are sometimes unreachable even for Jeeps and trucks and a Europe built in a Soviet-period farm; How the cheese is produced from the milk provided by Swedish cows and an European-style collective farm; How a remote and godforsaken village of Kartsakhi was turned into an international arterial highway passing through the alpine zone and connecting western and eastern economies; Utter poverty of the local residents and the rescue from Europe – you can see it all in the film.

The film crew navigated the 500 kilometer stretch of the main river in the Caucasus – Mtkvari River from the Turkish border to the Azerbaijani border on an inflatable raft. The goal of that strange journey was to study the state of the River’s environment. 

Plastic bottles, plastic bags, domestic and construction waste greatly damage Mtkvari’s ecosystem. So far quality of water was not checked in Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. That’s why Mtkvari River has always been a subject of mutual accusations and disputes.

About 250,000 internally displaced persons live in various regions of Georgia. 18 years have past since these people left the conflict zone. Negotiations on returning IDPs to the villages near the border and ensuring their security continued for months and years. A small part of IDPs managed to return to the villages of Gali district at their own peril.

The film is about the projects funded by European Union in two major Georgian towns – Batumi (Adjara region) and Kutaisi (Imereti region).

A special device has been installed in Batumi, which eliminates medical waste gathered in Adjara region. As of now the medical waste has been completely segregated from other types of waste in landfills. 130 medical institutions working in Adjara are obliged to sort out their waste and pay special tax for their elimination.

The film is about one of the projects funded by European Union in one of the regions of Georgia – Kakheti. That project is one of the components of the reforms carried out in primary health care system. Primary health care outpatients' clinics were built and equipped in 53 villages of Kakheti region; that enabled local residents to receive qualified primary medical aid locally.

The Outpatients' clinic situated in the village of Manavi is one of the success stories of that project.

The film is about juvenile delinquents, it depicts the life and ways of the youth prison as well as difficult life of street children. Many of them usually end up in jail. The main respondent featured in the film – 16 year old Nika was released from prison a month ago. He doesn't know what direction his life will take. There are no prevention, rehabilitation or reintegration programs for juvenile offenders in Georgia. In order to tackle that problem the European Union launched a project directed at helping juvenile delinquents in Georgia.
