Mental health issues in Georgia

 Listeners had an opportunity to listen to the comments of  Mr. Alexander Kvitashvili -Minister of Health, Labour and Social Protection of Georgia and Mr. Giorgi Tugushi - Public Defender, about the monitoring results implemented in psychiatric institutions.

Everyone is independent and equal with his rights and honors – this is the main postulation of human. Though, mentally disordered people are often rejected and they become the objects of discrimination and stigma.

Invited guests spoke about the meaning of stigma and how we can overcome it. What resources exist in the society to get over the stigma and to make better conditions for medical treatment and caring for those who have psychical problems.

Nino Agdgomelashvili, Project Manager of “Global Initiative on Psychiatry” spoke about the project  implemented with the financial support of  European Union – “Fight against mental problems associated with stigma and  discrimination” and the activities during the project process.

One of the main subjects of the transmission was the condition of the mental health policy in Georgia. What amount is foreseen for psychiatry from state budget, what experience could share Georgia from EU countries in this field and in what is expressed contribution with EU countries.

Mr. Archil Talakvadze informed the audience about January 2010 monitoring results held by Prevention and Monitoring Department of Public Defender’s office in the institutions placed  under the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection. He spoke about the problems that had arisen during the monitoring process.

One of the subjects of the transmission was also, how a media directs attention to the issues associated with  mentally disordered people.
